Third Week after the Quake Hit Yogyakarta*
Many villages in Yogyakarta area were damaged from the quake hit on May 27, 2006 in 5.8 scale. Below are the map location of the epicenter and one of the damage areas in Yogyakarta Province.
(1) The two points of epicenter is according to USGS and Unosat and (2) The spread of the damage buildings on the right map shows diverse damage spots in one area (source: http://rovicky.blogspot.com). Scene along the roads inside the affected areas of Yogyakarta was pitiful. Some buildings were half destroyed. Another was completely destroyed, flattened to the ground. Many were having no more roofs. (Berbah, Sleman) The left house was destroyed half, but could the remained one liable to live in? The right building was having only the bathroom and well outside it.

We reached Puskesmas, a branch hospital in village of Prambanan resident, and met a female doctor. There was also the medical team from Japan. She not only provided us information but also asked for help of assessing the building liability to utilize after the quake subsided.
(Puskesmas Prambanan, Sleman) The Puskesmas building had all the structure destroyed and was fragile. Damages were many affected the roof & ceiling construction.
Some pictures above showed how actually the building with great damage on roof or ceiling was very dangerous to use the space underneath. It is too risky, moreover public building such as hospital where the patients are to lie down on bed for such a time. No one expected another tremor, but this should be calculated in.
(Puskesmas Prambanan, Sleman) Still the damage of the roof was so obvious that no one could boldly use the space underneath.
The material of the wall also could be easily fell off and harm the patient. There were so many cracks on the wall. It is too risky to open and close the door when the structure of the wall was fragile. It might cause another burden to the wall so it could fall off. Definitely, I could not just judge, but expert on this matter should do. So I am looking for any volunteer or someone who has knowledge about this to help her assessing the building and finding out the plan to fix or renovated the building. Indonesian government should respond to this as well, but this calls for anyone.
*All data were compiled during short field survey on June, 15, 2006.
